The Health and Beauty Benefits of Almonds

Almonds, they’re more than just a tasty snack, they also provide a variety of beneficial nutrients—including protein, healthy unsaturated fats and vitamin E—that can help contribute to the beauty and health of your skin from the inside-out.

The approach to getting and maintaining healthy skin, hair and nails has fundamentally changed, with more women seeking natural beauty care and cleaner diets. Skincare experts and dietitians alike have emphasised not only the benefits of using natural beauty products, but also how dietary choices can have an effect on our external appearance. This is good news for the multi-tasking almond, which is an increasingly popular snack for women seeking nutritious choices.

“More and more, beauty is being looked at from both inside and out,”

says Lucy Jones, Consultant Dietitian and spokesperson for the Almond Board of California. “Research indicates that consuming natural antioxidants from foods may have beauty benefits, working from the inside to help nourish and protect our skin. At the same time, more and more beauty products are featuring natural, nutritious ingredients like almonds and berries to apply directly to the skin.”

Lucy highlights that almonds contain key nutrients for the maintenance of healthy skin, hair and nails, including:

Vitamin E: Almonds are an excellent source of the skin-loving antioxidant vitamin E, with each serving providing 60 percent of the recommended Daily Value.

Protein: This is the building block of both our skin and hair, in which almonds are a natural source.

Zinc: Almonds are a high source of this essential mineral, and although it may not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about getting beautiful skin, it’s essential for maintaining healthy skin as well as protecting our bodies from oxidative stress. 
So whether you are looking for a quick and nutritious snack or an all-natural, do-it-yourself beauty blitz, make some extra room in your kitchen pantry and bathroom cabinets because the multitasking almond can help contribute to the health of your skin from within.

Want to do more with almonds? You can easily turn almonds into a natural beauty product, here are the Almond board of California’s top tips:

  • Face Mask: Almond oil is not only light, rejuvenating and moisturising; it’s easily absorbed into the skin and makes a great base for face masks. Mix a tablespoon of almond oil with honey and lemon juice and apply directly to skin as a hydrating face mask. This can help heal dry patches and flaky skin.
  • Exfoliator: The granular texture of finely ground almonds or almond flour can be used as a natural, gentle way to exfoliate, rubbing away dead skin cells and refreshing the complexion. To make a homemade exfoliating scrub, soak almonds for a few hours in a mixture of milk and rose water, and then grind the almonds and the liquid in a food processor to the size of rough sand particles. Strain the mixture enough to make a paste, and use it as an exfoliating scrub. Rub gently on the face and rinse.
  • Hair Conditioner: Almond oil is one of the most common essential oils used in beauty products because it’s appropriate for all skin types. For natural hair care, try using almond oil as a deep conditioner. Apply almond oil throughout hair, paying attention to dry areas to thoroughly moisturize from roots to ends. Leave on for about 20 minutes, then wash and style as usual.
